Bessie Smith- After You’ve Gone (1927)

In this song she starts out by saying how she is going to be upset when he leaves. She can not believe that they are going to actually part their ways. Then she says how after he leaves he will “Regret it.” She also says that he will be blue and sad because he lost her. At the end of the song she says that his heart will break just like hers did and he will be lonely forever. This shows that even in 1927 the women had power. Individual power that made them feel like they were in control even if the man did leave them. They knew the men would miss them and that made them feel better about themselves.
